چکیده

In recent decades, the ecological condition is said to be deteriorating in the area of the Väike Strait in the West Estonian Archipelago. The strait has been closed by a 3 km-long road dam since 1896 and according to widespread opinion, as no water exchange between the Gulf of Riga and the Väinameri Sea occurs through this strait, the existence of the dam should be the main reason for those adverse changes. The main aims of the study are to analyse the past changes in the Väike Strait area, and to decide whether re-opening of the strait by constructing some bridged openings can improve the situation. The possible influence of holes were analysed by the means of high-resolution (size of the grid 200 m) twodimensional hydrodynamic modelling. Renewal times of water masses were calculated. The results on water and matter exchange suggested that the planned holes probably have a very small positive effect. The water exchange, depending on the scenario, increased only by about 6–12%, and yet in the zones nearby the dam. Most of the past changes have probably occurred either due to natural or of larger scale causes, such as isostatic land uplift, natural sedimentation and overall eutrophication of the sea. They cannot be turned back merely by constructing the openings, or even by entirely re-opening the strait.

The effect of focal spot size on the spatial resolution of variable resolution X-ray CT scanner

Background: A variable resolution X-ray (VRX) CT scanner provides a great increase in the spatial resolution. In VRX CT scanners, the spatial resolution of the system and its field of view (FOV) can be changed according to the object size. One of the main factors that limit the spatial resolution of VRX CT scanner is the effect of the X-ray focal spot. Materials and Methods: A theoreti...

River discharge to the Baltic Sea in a future climate

This study reports on new projections of discharge to the Baltic Sea given possible realisations of future climate and uncertainties regarding these projections. A high-resolution, pan-Baltic application of the Hydrological Predictions for the Environment (HYPE) model was used to make transient simulations of discharge to the Baltic Sea for a mini-ensemble of climate projections representing tw...

Transplant experiments uncover Baltic Sea basin-specific responses in bacterioplankton community composition and metabolic activities

Anthropogenically induced changes in precipitation are projected to generate increased river runoff to semi-enclosed seas, increasing loads of terrestrial dissolved organic matter and decreasing salinity. To determine how bacterial community structure and functioning adjust to such changes, we designed microcosm transplant experiments with Baltic Proper (salinity 7.2) and Bothnian Sea (salinity...

Enhanced Predictions of Tides and Surges through Data Assimilation (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...

Hydro-economic modelling of cost-effective transboundary water quality management in the Baltic Sea

Helcom's recently revised Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) aims to reduce eutrophication in the, Baltic Sea by reducing nutrient loads from all discharging drainage basins. The BALTCOST costminimisation, model, featuring abatement cost and effect functions which utilise spatial data down to, 10 10 km grid cell resolution, is used to identify a cost-effective distribution of nutrient abatement, mea...
